DRX at Worlds 2022 – the Cinderella run

DRX’s run at the 2022 World Championship is something that probably will never happen in the decades to come. The team defied all odds and rewrote history by lifting the trophy and completing one of the greatest underdog stories. And this is why Riot Games released a documentary, filming the behind-the-scenes action of their run at the world championship.

Where can you watch the DRX Worlds 2022 Documentary?

The DRX Worlds 2022 documentary goes over the journey of the underdogs which defeated the most decorated team in the world, T1, who came to the tournament looking like the favorites. It was Faker’s chance to win the World Championship after 5 long years, and a fourth world-title would’ve probably established as the most victorious player of the entire future LoL history.

But the headlines didn’t end there: another player was eager to win its first world title, and that was Deft. The Korean ADC, who happened to be studying at the same high school as Faker, also started his career back when the GOAT debuted. But unfortunately, he wasn’t able to dominate like the Korean mid laner, despite being world-class for many years.

When everyone thought they wouldn’t make it past the play-in stage, they made it happen. From a dominant performance in the play-in stage, beating China’s fourth seed RNG, to getting the first seed in their group, DRX knew they had a solid chance. But people were still sleeping on the team.

From beating EDward Gaming in one of the most hectic series of all time, to winning against the Korean first seed Gen.G, DRX broke all expectations and became the finalist at the world championship. From nearly missing the tournament, to winning it all by beating his ex schoolmate, it was truly a magical moment for Deft and the entire roster of DRX. A moment that the player waited for 10 long years, sacrificing most of his twenties chasing the dream of becoming champion.

Produced by Red Bull Media House in partnership with Riot Games, the documentary features interviews with the players of DRX and shows glimpses from the event and the team’s matches. It’s an hour-long documentary which you can watch for free on the LoL Esports Youtube channel: it might be a bit long, but it’s definitely worth watching it at least once.

Where are the players now?

Despite winning the title, four players of the roster ended up switching teams for 2023. Everyone but support player Cho “BeryL” Geon-he left the team, and DRX only managed to finish 7th in the LCK 2023 Summer Playoffs, and won’t be able to defend the title this year in their home country, South Korea.

That said, two out of the five players from the 2022 winning roster will be at Worlds: Deft will play for Dplus Kia while jungler Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon will be playing with Team Liquid. Top laner Hwang “Kingen” Seong-hoon and mid laner Kim “Zeka” Geon-woo lost to Dplus KIA in the LCK Regional Finals, failing to qualify for the tournament.
