In July 2022, Fortnite will be celebrating its five year anniversary. When it first launched back in 2017, it became massively successful in a seriously short period of time. Today, it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest battle royale games to ever exist. Since those early days, one of the most popular aspects of Fortnite has been the many skins that can be unlocked and purchased through the game’s store. In the last five years, we’ve seen a staggering number of them appear, but how many skins are in Fortnite in total?
For the last half-decade, we’ve seen skins pop up to celebrate movie franchises, television shows, other games, and comic book franchises. There has also been a vast number of original skins, created by Epic Games to bring in the big (v) bucks, with some of these skins costing as much as $20. With that information in mind, let’s break down the collection and learn, once and for all, how many skins are in Fortnite.
Beauty is Only Skin Deep
The first-ever Fortnite skin was the SJCll Trooper, which popped up in the Fortnite item shop not too long after launch. Once upon a time, it was considered the rarest Fortnite skin in the game, and if you use it now, you truly are an ‘OG’ player. Since then, there have been approximately 1290 skins released in Fortnite. It’s a remarkable figure that almost seems unbelievable, but it’s the truth.
In the last five years, almost 1300 skins have been released in Fortnite. If you break that down, that’s around 21 skins per month, every month, since the game launched. That’s the kind of regularity Fortnite works with when it comes to skins, and it makes sense when you consider that skins serve as the base financial model of the free-to-play battle royale game. There are skins for weapons, gliders, and of course, characters, and it’s a diverse and vibrant marketplace.
Some of the most popular Fortnite skins sell in the millions, with fans rushing to purchase them on launch. This includes special edition crossovers, which in recent years have included the likes of Marvel’s Avengers, Star Wars, and countless videogame franchises, such as the recent introduction of Fortnite Uncharted skins.
Rare Means Rare
Fortnite isn’t like other games that feature skins as a financial model, such as CSGO. In Counter-Strike, skins can be unlocked, traded, and even used to fund gambling practices. Where Fortnite is concerned, a skin unlocked is a skin kept forever – you can’t trade or sell them. If somebody wants to sell Fortnite skins, they’ll need to sell their entire account to another player seeking that skin. For those that have staked a claim to the top 50 rarest skins in Fortnite, for example, this could be a lucrative – but unsafe – practice.
Ultimately, if you’ve been wondering how many skins are in Fortnite, there’s your answer – approximately 1290, as of March 2022.
As Fortnite continues to mature as a platform, that number is likely to soar. There’s a strong fanbase right now and it continues to grow, with Fortnite standing firm as one of the best battle royale games out there today. When the tenth anniversary of Fortnite comes around, we may be celebrating our 3000th skin – who knows?
