According to a report by Money Control, the game has received full approval from the Indian government to continue its services in the country. BGMI returned to India in May 2023, nearly a year after the game was banned for alleged data privacy concerns.

At the time, India’s Union Minister of electronics and Technology had said that BGMI was only being approved for a three-month trial period. During this period, the government would keep a close eye, particularly on the game’s potentially harmful or addictive effects. This decision was taken after Krafton complied with the government’s concerns regarding data privacy.

Now, it seems that the game is here to stay as BGMI has passed its three-month trial period. The report by Money Control, which cites sources “familiar” with the matter, seems to confirm it.

A big ordeal for BGMI in India

The story of BGMI’s ban begins back in September 2020. PUBG Mobile was part of a ban wave on Chinese applications amidst heightened border tensions between the two Asian countries. The Indian government had accused the Tencent-published game of “surreptitiously transferring users’ data to servers outside India.”

Krafton later took the reigns for the game in India. The company revealed a localized and rebranded version called Battlegrounds Mobile India in May 2021. However, even this game faced the ban hammer just a year later.

The second ban put a lot of BGMI fans in dismay as it seemed to indicate a permanent ban on the game. However, Krafton managed to bring it back after addressing the government’s concerns related to data privacy.

Despite this, there was a lot of negative connotation attached to BGMI due to cases of game addiction. To address this, Krafton imposed virtual world reminders, game time restrictions, and only green blood in the game. It seems that these have paid off as the game is finally here to stay.

Krafton also recently announced that it was bringing the Battlegrounds Mobile India Series (BGIS) as a LAN event in Mumbai next month. This event will be the second LAN for the game since it was unbanned after the BGMI Masters Series (BGMS).
