Nothing hits hard in nostalgia for Dota 2 fans when it comes to the friendship and bonds of Dota 2 pro players. Wang “Ame” Chunyu and Lu “Somnus” Yao ex-teammates reunite for the Asian Games.
Ame and Somnus at the Asian Games 2023
China has picked its players for the Dota 2 national roster competing at the Asian Games 2023. Alongside Ame and Somnus are formidable allies in the Chinese competitive scene, such as Yang “Chalice” Shenyi, Zhao “XinQ” Zixing, Yu “皮球” Yajun and Xiong “Pyw” Jiahan.
Chalice is also one of the founding players from TI8 PSG.LGD, while XinQ is the newer PSG.LGD support player, who served during TI10 and TI11.
Then, there’s also 皮球, from Team Aster, and Pyw from Invictus Gaming. This is a stacked dream team straight out of Dota 2 fantasy league.
Ame emerges from inactivity
Additionally, the Asian Games 2023 is also Ame’s first official pro game since his inactivity back in December 2022. While it’s uncertain whether Ame will even consider returning to competitive Dota 2 after the Asian Games 2023, it’s still a treat for Ame fans.
Ame has competed for PSG.LGD since 2017, contributing to PSG.LGD’s success with phenomenal performance. Yet, every TI, Ame was always so close to winning TI, but ultimately did not. When Ame placed second at TI8, it seems that the young prodigy really took the loss to heart.
A recent footage of drunk Ame apologizing to Somnus for his bad decision-making as Morphling in the fourth game of TI8 Grand Finals, truly left fans heartbroken. As it turns out, Ame truly felt that he let his teammates down, especially Somnus at that time.
Will Ame play with Somnus after the Asian Games 2023?
Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Ame and Somnus will be in the same team after the Asian Games 2023. In fact, Somnus did attempt to recruit Ame for his current team, Azure Ray, to qualify for the Bali Major 2023.
However, since Ame is still under contract with PSG.LGD, Azure Ray went on without Ame. As disappointing as it is to not see Ame join his fellow former teammates, which also includes Somnus, Chalice and Xu “fy” Linsen, Azure Ray looks promising.
Nonetheless, look forward to Azure Ray at the Bali Major 2023, as a silhouette of TI8 PSG.LGD’s glory days.
Next up: The Asian Games 2023
Originally scheduled for 2022, the event is also known as the 19th Asian Games, or Hangzhou 2022. However, the organizers decided to postpone due to safety concerns over the pandemic in China.
The China national team will compete against seventeen teams from different countries. Countries, such as Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and even Indonesia, will likely be the main opponents at the Asian Games, as they are renowned as a major hub for Dota 2 talents and teams. Even then, the China team, featuring several high-profile players, is easily the strongest going into the Asian Games 2023.
