When Can You Preload MW3? (And What’s The Download Size?)

Modern Warfare 3 is starting to creep over the horizon, and in just ten days, every Call of Duty fan in the world will be preparing to jump headlong into the game. Before then, the campaign’s early access phase will drop, and all those who have pre-ordered the game will get access to the final chapter of the rebooted Modern Warfare saga. If you’re counting yourself in that group, you might be wondering when you can preload MW3, and when you do, what the game’s download size will be.

Unfortunately, Call of Duty tends to operate a little differently from all other games these days. To play Modern Warfare 3, you’ll need to have the ‘COD HQ’ installed on your device. This is the central Call of Duty hub, and it’s where you’ll navigate to the game you want to play, browse the store, and check out your stats, amongst other things. Sadly, having this as a requirement means that one hell of a lot of storage space is about to be taken up on your console or PC.

If you’ve got early access to the campaign, you can start preloading the game from 10 am PT on November 1st. It’ll then unlock twenty-four hours later, at 10 am PT on November 2nd, and from that point on, you’ll have access to the immersive, gritty story that’s going to take you back to Verdansk, of all places.

Now, to those pesky download sizes.

It fluctuates depending on your platform of choice, but ultimately, you’ll need around 150 GB of storage space to install and play Modern Warfare 3. That includes the core game itself and the Call of Duty HQ. If you already have the COD HQ, you cut your download and install requirements in half, essentially. It does tend to differ dramatically from platform to platform, and that’s true for season updates, hotfixes and patches — the entire suite. It’s never the same across different formats.

How Do I Get Early Access To The MW3 Campaign?

That’s a great question.

If you want early access to the MW3 campaign, you’ll need to pre-order any copy of the game. It’s easily done through a digital storefront on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms, and with the press of a few buttons, you’ll be sitting there, preparing to preload MW3. It’s expected that this will be one of the darkest Call of Duty campaigns ever, featuring scenes that are ‘worse than No Russian’, which was the infamous airport mission featured in 2009’s Modern Warfare 2.

It’ll only be around five or six hours in duration, but that means that you’ll be able to play through it a few times before the multiplayer portion of the game launches globally on November 10th. There will be achievements and trophies to unlock, collectables to secure, and multiplayer rewards unlocked for doing specific things in the campaign. So, get cracking! You’ve got early access for a reason, right?
